The emphasis of the week has been writing. Using Andrew Pudewa's ideas in his curriculum, Excellence in Writing we are writing about everything from creative stories to history and Bible narrations. Since I haven't required much writing from the younger ones they have been excited to tackle a new task. To record for posterity their precious stages, here is a sample of their work:
Joining the Terrible War
By D.J. (edited), 5th Grade,
A summary of a story in a history lesson in Story of the World: Volume 4
One day a powerful German ship was going up and down the British coastline attacking random ships. On May 7, 1915 a German submarine fired a torpedo at a ship called Lusitania. A little while later it sank and all the passengers scrambled to the top in vain. One thousand, two hundred people drowned. And they were all civilians NOT soldiers! The rest of the world was furious. This broke the rules of war because you are not supposed to shoot at civilian ships but you can shoot at war ships. U.S.A. was extremely angry because there were over 100 U.S. citizens on board the Lustiania. Americans began to think that they should join the terrible war.

In a rush to be done and realizing that Mom was not looking over her shoulder, she didn't really follow the assignment. She amazed her brother when she said she was done...I just love to see what is going on in her head. To be fair, here's an edited Bible narration:
The Wind and the Seas Obeyed Him
by L.J. (edited)
One evening Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go across to the other side of the sea." He slowly left the crowd on the shore while he got on the boat. He rode with other boats too. There was a windstorm and breaking waves filling the boat with water. Jesus was restfully sleeping in the stern on a cushion. The people yelled to Jesus, "Teacher! Don't you care that we are perishing?" He awoke and rebuked the waves. Jesus shouted, "Be still!" and the wind and the sea obeyed. The people filled with great fear because even the wind and the waves obeyed him.
and finally, a story that M dictated to Mom
The Slower Wins, the Faster Loses
by M.J. (edited)
The cheetah was making fun of the buffalo because he was slower. The buffalo was so annoyed so he jumped on the cheetah and asked, "Do you want to run a race?" The cheetah laughed and screeched, "That's not a contest!" Slowly the buffalo got off of the cheetah. A pig set up a course carefully. A hare was the judge. They started the race. The cheetah was so far ahead. He was tired of running and tiredly fell asleep. The buffalo was plodding fast and he went past the cheetah sneakily. He was about to step on the finish line then the cheetah awoke madly. The cheetah zoomed, and then the buffalo stepped on the finish line. Everybody cheered loudly.
