The countdown is in progress - only two more chapters & one lab to go to finish out our Apologia Biology study.
After working on their leaf books (classifying 20 leaves from their yard) we met together to discuss leaves, stems and roots. Though the topic doesn't seem too stimulating (I believe it was J who said, "Why do I have to know this?) it is truly amazing what takes place inside that thin little leaf. I find myself thinking of it as I munch my spinach. We used the coloring sheet of a leaf cross section and tree bingo game to go beyond the text.
Of course the most enthusiasm was seen in the boys over the smell of ammonia. And then again as they were amused by the ammonia & vinegar's effect of changing the pH of their solution so that the anthocyanin pigment in red cabbage would change colors. Poof - kind of like the potions in Lord of the Rings.
What would a lab be without food?
Today's menu was a snack of plant foods
guacamole, bean dip, corn chips
and sweet green tea.
