Location: Falls Church, VA – Purcellville, VA – Camp K20, NY
Car ride activities: Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan: A Depression Era story about a young girl who moved from a wealthy life in Mexico to a work camp in California after the death of her father. Madlibs led by K entertained all for a while.
To further explore her career options K spent the last week at Patrick Henry College attending the Journalism Teen Camp. Thirty-five kids spent the week learning from Dr. Les Sillars, a journalism professor at PHC. Days were filled with writing, hearing first hand from journalists and visiting the Newseum in DC. K won the designation out of the 35 students of having the best “Hard News Story.” Evenings contained a healthy rivalry with the Constitutional Law Camp in games led by creative camp counselors.
“Tamp! Tamp! Go to Tamp!” A chanted in the backseat. Once we picked up her sister she was ready to get there. By 8 p.m., after several grocery stops, her dream was realized and we pulled in to our little home in the woods.
